Glasgow 2014: Opening ceremony will fire starting gun on poverty revolution as Games launch global fundraising for needy kids

GLASGOW 2014’s opening ceremony will fire the starting gun on a revolution in global fundraising for needy kids.

An unprecedented collaboration between organisers and children’s charity Unicef will try to raise millions by reaching out to a telly audience of one billion people.

One-time James Bond actor Sir Roger Moore joined film-maker Lord Puttnam in the city yesterday to reveal the anti-poverty plan.

The link-up will see viewers and people in the stadium able to donate to Unicef by text message.

Glasgow 2014 Sports Programme Finalised

he Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will be bigger than ever with more medals and additional events for female and Para-Sport athletes it was revealed today (Tuesday, May 1).
The Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee (OC) today unveiled its final Sports Programme. As well as confirming details of the events to be held across 17 sports and 11 days of competition, Glasgow 2014's Sports Programme will feature additional highlights including:
  • The biggest-ever number of Para-Sports Medals in Commonwealth Games History - 22 Medal events in total
  • Innovative new Triathlon Mixed Relay event
  • First Para-Sport Cycling (Track) event included in the Games
  • Additional participation and medal opportunities for female athletes in Shooting
  • All additional opportunities for athletes and spectators alike will be delivered within existing Games budgets, planning and resources.

100th Member of Staff Appointed at Glasgow 2014

Glasgow 2014 has hit the landmark 100th member of staff with the appointment of former Commonwealth, Olympic and World Championship swimmer Todd Cooper to the Organising Committee's Sport team as Sport Competition Cluster Manager.
Today's milestone appointment comes as Glasgow 2014 continues to ramp up its recruitment campaign to fill 1,044 posts across a wide variety of roles between now and the Games. The roles will range from venue specialists to sports technicians to commercial and sponsorship roles to more general IT, corporate and administration posts. With the major recruitment drive underway, Glasgow 2014 will exclusively use the services of Search Consultancy which will be vital to achieving the goal of recruiting 1,044 employees for Games-time.
